What Is Self-Love Day? (Plus 12 Simple Ideas To Celebrate)

Self-love day

You have most likely heard of self-love. But did you know that there is an entire international holiday dedicated to self-love?

Today we are going to cover exactly what self-love day is and how it even became a thing.

When Is Self-Love Day?

International Self-Love day is celebrated every year on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day.

What is Self-Love Day?

Self-Love Day is an annual celebration to highlight the importance of self-love.

Why is Self-Love Day The Day Before Valentine’s Day?

Self-love Day falls on the day before Valentine’s Day because historically we put so much pressure on ourselves and other people when it comes to our relationships and being single, especially for Valentine’s Day.

Celebrating Self-Love Day on the day before Valentine’s Day helps to remind us that our relationship with ourselves should come first.

What is the history of Self- Love Day?

Self-love is not a new concept. It has been discussed in ancient Greece, by Christians, psychologists, and philosophers for decades. However, self-love didn’t become popular until the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Christina Arylo, author and advocate for self-love, started the first Self-Love Day in 2008 as a way to help people realize how powerful self-love is and how it can change your entire life for the better.

12 Ways To Celebrate Self-Love Day

So how should you celebrate Self-Love Day?

Since our relationship with ourselves is a personal one, each person’s experience will be different. But here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Write yourself a self-love letter

While you might give your significant other a romantic letter or a cute card on Valentine’s Day, you can do the same for yourself the day before.

Making a list of all the things that you love about yourself, or expressing your gratitude when it comes to your gifts and blessings will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

2. Put on your favorite outfit

Do you have an outfit or a makeup look or a hairstyle (or all of the above) that makes you feel really good about yourself?

Get dressed up and spend a few minutes standing in front of the mirror. Be mindful about how you look and appreciate yourself.

You could even snap some photos to remember the moment.

3. Cook your favorite meal (or order in)

There is something special about enjoying your favorite meal, either cooking it yourself or ordering it from somewhere. People often go out to eat to celebrate special occasions, and self-love day is a special occasion.

4. Check in with your goals

Are you the type of person that likes to set goals? Self-love Day is a great to check on how you are progressing. Deciding if you need to pivot, or if you need to reassess what you want out of life is powerful, and figuring out a plan to help achieve your goals gives you a sense of ownership in your own life.

5. Make time for something you love

You should always be making time for the things you love, but you should make sure to make this a priority on self-love day. Do you have a passion project that you haven’t worked on in a while? Is there a hobby that you love, but haven’t made time for lately? Self-love Day is the perfect day to remind yourself about what is important.

6. Try some self-love meditation

If you have never done meditation before, it can seem intimidating. But meditation doesn’t have to be chanting and poses and humming, and all of these preconceptions you might have about it.

Taking a few moments to close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and reflect on all of the things that you love and value about yourself will give a large positive surge to your self-worth.

7. Spend extra time pampering yourself

Self-care is extremely important and should already be included in your everyday routines, but there are other self-care activities that you might only get to once in a while.

Self-love day is the perfect time to spend time at the spa, get a massage, or take a luxurious bubble bath with all of the extras.

8. Reorganize your space

Is there a space in your home that you feel is no longer serving you? Maybe it is a disorganized work desk or a cluttered bedroom.

Enviromental self-care is so important, and by taking time to transform the space around you into one that you enjoy, you are ensuring you are the happiest version of yourself.

9. Invest in yourself

One of the best ways to increase your self-worth, and in turn your self-love, is to invest in yourself. By investing, I don’t necessarily mean spending money on yourself. You can also invest energy and time.

Some examples of investing in yourself are:

  • Signing up for a professional conference to further your career
  • Purchasing (or checking out from the library) those self-help books that you have been eyeing up
  • Joining a likeminded community
  • Going back to school to further your education

10. Spend time participating in self-reflection

Self-love Day is the perfect time to dive deep into some self-reflection. This can include doing things like reflecting on your achievements, examining your weaknesses, and generally getting to know yourself better

11. Try some self-love affirmations

Affirmations are such a powerful tool. I used to think affirmations were silly and ineffective. However, I am so glad that I had an open mind and decided to give them a chance.

Affirmations had such a positive impact on changing my mindset on how I felt about myself. Reciting self-love affirmations on self-love day is one great way to surround yourself with love and positivity.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. I love who I am
  2. I love every part of myself
  3. I deserve a loving and peaceful life
  4. I am in control of my life
  5. I love myself
  6. I am powerful
  7. I am proud of myself
  8. I am learning to support my best self
  9. I am blessed, loved, and valued
  10. I am worthy of good things

12. Try new self-care activities

Self-care and self-love go hand in hand. When you take proper care of yourself, you are sending a message to yourself that you are worthy of love and attention.

Self-love Day is the perfect day to experiment with some new self-care activities that you could add to your self-care routines.

Final Thoughts On Self-Love Day…

While self-love day is a wonderful idea, you shouldn’t need a special day in order to love yourself. Every day should be a day to celebrate yourself and to love and value yourself even more than you did the day before.

Take care of yourself.
