8 Ways To Focus On Your Health In 2024

Full transparency here, I used to be one of those people who always made it my New Year’s resolution to focus on my health for the year to follow.

As most people do when they make a New Year’s resolution, I told myself that this next year coming up things were going to be different.

I was overweight, and out of shape, and my life was starting to see negative consequences because of it.

But every year without fail I would start off strong and full of motivation. Then I would usually have a little success. Like keeping up with a diet or exercise plan. Or losing some weight. I would make some positive changes, but they were never sustainable, and then before long I would be back to my old bad habits.

And I’m not alone. There is a reason why new gym membership signups spike in January of the new year and then taper off as the year goes on. It can be hard to make new goals and resolutions that actually stick and get us real results, especially when it comes to our health.

But below we will talk about 3 reasons why you should focus on your health, and show you 8 actionable steps to focus on your health in 2023.

3 Big reasons to focus on your health

1) Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can extend our lives

The largest reason to make our health a priority is that taking the best care of ourselves will ensure we live as long as possible.

In fact, according to research done by American Heart Association, maintaining a healthier lifestyle could improve our life expectancy at age 50 by 14 years for women and 12 for men.

2) Improving our health can improve our ability to cope with stress

When we are healthier we have more energy and better resilience when it comes to facing stressful situations. Our physical health also impacts our mental and emotional health as well, helping us to avoid burnout

3) When we are healthier we are happier

Regular exercise and eating healthier makes us feel better. It can also increase our self-confidence and help us relax.

Here are 8 ways to make your health your focus in 2023

1) Start small

Having a huge goal can be great, but it can also be overwhelming and make it more intimidating for you to get started and stay committed to focusing on your health.

While you more than likely mean well by setting large goals and dreaming big, you could actually be setting yourself up for failure.

Instead of making it your goal to lose sixty pounds this year, it would be wise to start with a smaller goal like to get yourself moving for a half an hour twice a week. By breaking up a big goal into small, actionable goals and steps, it makes it much easier to accomplish and doesn’t seem like such a daunting task.

2) Get enough sleep

When we don’t get enough sleep it can negatively affect our short and long term memory as well as our ability to focus. Sleep is so important for our health, so by ensuring you get the right amount of sleep you will already be one step closer to your goal.

According to the CDC

Adults 18-60 years old need 7 or more hours per night

Adults 16-44 years old need 7-9 hours per night

And adults 65 years and older need 7-8 hours per night

3) Focus on similar tasks and batch tasks together if possible

If you are able to pick tasks that are similar and group them together so you can accomplish them at the same time, it can make transitions smoother and save time from jumping all over the place trying to multitask.

For example, instead of meal prepping a healthy meal for lunch the next day before you go to sleep every night, try meal prepping your lunches for the entire week at once. This will save you time and make the task easier to manage.

4) Create a to-do list

Studies have shown that having a to-do list can increase your productivity. Having a list also helps you rank items in order of importance so you can prioritize them.

Seeing your tasks in written form and then having the ability to check them off or cross them out when you are finished will give you a sense of accomplishment that can motivate you to keep going.

5) Eat properly

You might be thinking, “Wait, this is actually one of my goals for focusing on my health. How can it help me reach that goal if it’s a goal in itself?”

Fueling our bodies with the proper nutrition gives us more energy and can help improve our focus.

You know that sluggish feeling you get when you stuff yourself full of so much carbs and sugar that you can barely move? Feeling that crappy makes it hard to stay focused or to find the motivation to accomplish your tasks.

And when that task is focusing on your health, eating foods that you no are not good for your body is a step in the wrong direction.

6) Get rid of distractions

It can be difficult to focus when we are constantly being bombarded with new and exciting information everywhere we look. Scheduling a specific block of time out of your day for you to eliminate distractions and focus on your task can help.

For example, if the television keeps distracting you turn it off or move to another room. If your kids need your attention which is making it too hard to focus on a workout, try waking up early and exercising when they are still sleeping.

7) Eliminate causes of stress

Stress is a motivation killer. When we become overwhelmed by the amount of stress in our lives we experience something called burnout which can be like completely shutting down our body and our minds.

Not only is stress just plain bad for our health, but it can make it hard to concentrate, hard to find motivation, and hard to and see things from a clear point of view.

When you have had a really tough and stressful day at the work, it can feel easier to come home and relax, maybe telling yourself you can push your goals and tasks to a different day.

That would be fine if it was a rare occurrence, but chances are the cause of stress will still be there and after too many days of putting things off, you will have abandoned your goal completely.

By determining exactly what is causing you stress in your life and then working to eliminate or reduce it, you help to set yourself up for success and prevent this from happening.

8) Celebrate small successes

Most people tend to be much harder on themselves when they need to be. When we are so focused on the end destination, it can be easy to dismiss the progress that we have already made towards that goal.

Every small step towards a goal is a win.

Celebrating the little victories and positive steps you have made along the way will not only make you feel good, but it will motivate you to keep going when there are times that you might not want to.

Our health is one of the most important things in our lives and is not something that should be taken for granted. Using the above suggestions to help you focus on your health and accomplish your goals will enable you to succeed and help you live a much happier and longer life.
