A woman is sitting with her arms wrapped around her legs. She is feeling lost.

Feeling lost in life is one of the worst things I have ever experienced and it changed everything for me. In 2021 I reached my rock-bottom and didn’t know where I was supposed to go from there.

I had thought I was happy and successful, but I quickly realized I was just in denial about how badly I was struggling, and how overwhelmed I felt.

I didn’t know if things were ever going to get better.

I felt helpless and alone.

Luckily, I have come so far since that time, and my life has never been better. I know I will never return to that place again.

But many of us reach times in our life when we are lost.

That’s why in this article we are going to explore twelve reasons why people feel lost in life, and how to get back on track when you feel lost in life.

Why am I feeling lost in life?

Reviewing the reasons you feel lost in life can help you understand what you need to do to find yourself. There is no shame at all in feeling lost. Everyone will most likely experience it at some time in their life.

Here are twelve common reasons why people feel lost in life:

1) You are experiencing a big life transition

Going through something like a divorce, graduation, or losing a job can lead to you feeling lost in life. It can be difficult to adjust to big changes in life and to know what direction you are supposed to head in once the destination suddenly changes on you.

2) You are in survival mode

This was one thing that was a big part of me feeling lost in life. I had been living in survival mode for so long that I no longer had a direction in my life. I was just focused on surviving.

While this is necessary for many people depending on their circumstances, living in survival mode for too long can lead to many negative consequences in life.

3) You are burned out

When you experience large levels of stress for a long time without proper stress management, it can be easy to experience burnout.

Being overwhelmed and having no energy at all like you do when you are burned out can lead to you feeling like a lost zombie.

4) You’ve lost your why

Achieving something with a lack of purpose can lead to people feeling unfulfilled. If you no longer know the reason or motivation behind why you are doing something or working towards something, it can lead to feelings of being lost.

5) You are neglecting your social self-care needs

Humans are social creatures. Some people may be more social than others, but a lack of socializing can have a negative impact on our well-being and lead to us feeling lonely and lost.

6) You are dwelling on the past

When you continue to dwell on something that has already happened in life, that means you are looking backward instead of looking forward in life.

It is important to learn to let go in a healthy way in order to move forward.

7) You are putting others before yourself

When you continuously put the other people in your life before yourself, it can be easy to lose yourself in that process. If you don’t consider yourself, you can lose track of who you are as a person and what you want in life.

8) You’ve attached your self-worth to something external

When your self-worth is dependent on things like your achievements, career, or relationship, you can be lost when you lose that thing, or it starts to suffer.

That is why it’s important to have a strong sense of self-worth that is independent of all things external.

9) You are comparing yourself to others

When you compare yourself to other people, it is possible to get lost when you feel like you aren’t measuring up. The rise of social media has only made this more common.

It would be wise to remember that much of what gets posted on social media is heavily edited, and curated, and oftentimes isn’t even real.

10) You’ve lost yourself

When you reach a point of unfulfillment in life, it can be easy to become unmotivated and unhappy with it.

Waking up and realizing you suddenly don’t know who you are isn’t something that I am a stranger to. Luckily I was able to rediscover myself, and my life so much better than it was before I lost myself.

11) You are scared

If you are living in fear, or scared to step out of your comfort zone and try new experiences or take a risk on something that you lead to your long-term happiness, it can often feel paralyzing. This can lead to you feeling no sense of direction or where you should go in life.

12) You aren’t in touch with your feelings

Self-reflection is one of the most important things we can do ourselves in order to be happy. It helps us to get in touch with our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors which in turn will help us to know if we are heading in the right direction or not, or if we need to correct course.

How can you get back on track when you feel lost in life?

1) Engage in self-care

Engaging in a quality self-care routine can actually help to solve a lot of the reasons on the list above. Not only does it help reduce stress, but it increases our self-confidence and our self-worth.

By taking proper care of ourselves, we are showing ourselves we are worth that extra attention. This helps us to become the best versions of ourselves.

2) Lean back on your support system

Sometimes loneliness can be confused with feeling lost. All you might need to regain your focus and remember what is truly important in life is to spend time with people that love and support you.

3) Try something new

By stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new, from a new experience to traveling somewhere new, you can learn a lot about yourself and what you want out of life.

4) Visualize your ideal life

If you could snap your fingers and have your dream life, what would that look like? By thinking about what you really want, you can figure out what direction you need to go in order to make that happen.

5) Focus on your passions

By spending time doing what you really love and enjoy, you will be focusing on the things that make you happy and that you love to do. That will help you discover what you value in life.

6) Try a digital detox

Sometimes the internet can be toxic and distracting. Constantly scrolling and avoiding thinking about your problems will not do anyone any good.

A digital detox can give you some much-needed distance and insight.

7) Try self-reflection

Self-reflection is an amazing tool to help you to get to know yourself better. It can help you explore your emotions, thoughts, and actions while helping you to discover what you truly want out of life.

Several things that can help with self-reflection are:

  • Thought-provoking questions
  • Journaling
  • Spending time alone
  • Spending time in nature
  • Therapy

Final thoughts…
