Why Knowing Yourself Is Important (15 Surprising Reasons)

A man is staring at a white mask. He is reflecting on knowing himself.

It was only two years ago that I knew something needed to change. I was stressed out and overwhelmed, and I knew I wasn’t happy.

But I didn’t know how to fix it.

Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to figure out how to make myself happy and create my dream life, I would need to discover exactly what made me happy in the first place.

Knowing where to start was hard. Accepting that I had been in survival mode for almost ten years and didn’t know myself as well as I thought I did was tough.

But it was so worth it.

That’s why in this post we are going to talk about the fifteen reasons why knowing yourself is important.

What does knowing yourself even mean?

According to the dictionary, to know oneself means to understand our own emotions, desires, and motivations.

Knowing yourself is an ongoing process. It isn’t just about knowing what your favorite food is, or what your pet peeves are.

It means knowing yourself deep down, and why your past experiences, and the way you think and feel, make you you.

Why is knowing yourself important?

1) It can boost your confidence

When you know yourself, you know what your gifts and abilities are.

There are many great things about yourself, and focusing on those things can help you to realize that you are a special and amazing person.

This will give you a confidence boost.

2) It is one of the first steps to loving yourself

You can’t truly love yourself if you don’t understand yourself and know who you really are as a person deep down.

While learning how to love yourself in the way that you deserve can be difficult, learning about yourself is the first step and one of the hardest.

3) It will help you to accept yourself

Trying to accept everything about yourself, including your past, your traumas, your weaknesses, and your mistakes, is tough.

However, we can’t love ourselves if we don’t accept all the parts of us– even the rough parts.

We can’t accept those parts if we don’t reflect on them.

4) It will help you make the best decisions you can

When it is time to make important decisions in your life, it can be easy to make a decision based on what you think you might want without really thinking it through.

If we know ourselves better, it will be easier to make the best decisions for who we are and what we want out of life.

5) It will improve your relationships

When you are shining a light on your own flaws and weaknesses, it makes it easier to be more empathetic when it comes to the weaknesses of those around us.

This can strengthen our relationships.

6) It will give you direction in life

The first step to figuring out what direction we would like our lives to go in is figuring out who we are and what we want out of life.

When you feel lost, or stuck, or like no matter what you try things just aren’t working out, it would be wise to do some self-reflection and get to know yourself better.

It is a quote about knowing yourself. It says "to grow yourself you must know yourself"

7) It can help you to become a better person

Sometimes, you aren’t aware of your own weaknesses or bad behavior. But when you learn who you really are, it makes it easier for you to accept that there might be parts of you that you want to change.

Learning from past mistakes and becoming better people is what life is all about.

8) It can help you to stop being a people pleaser

I am a people pleaser, and it is something I am still working on to this day. However, I wouldn’t have really considered myself a people pleaser if I hadn’t taken the time to truly get to know myself.

A big reason why others people please in the first place is because they seek out that validation and acceptance from others.

They might not be happy with themselves, so they chose to make other people happy instead.

However, this can often lead to many negative consequences for the person doing the people-pleasing.

When we learn more about ourselves and why making other people happy is so important to us, we may be able to stop the behavior or at least negate the negative effects it has on us.

9) It can help you to understand your self-worth

Self-worth is such an important part of life. People with a low sense of self-worth tend to end up in unhealthy situations such as toxic relationships, addiction issues, and chronic health conditions.

Sometimes it can be hard to realize how amazing you are, and how much you deserve true happiness.

Your worth isn’t dependent on your achievements, or how smart you are, or how you look.

It’s about who you are as a person.

10) It can help you to be kinder to yourself

Once you get to know yourself and you reflect on just how much you have been through, it can be easier to treat yourself with more kindness.

No one is perfect, and no one has a perfect life.

You are doing the best you can.

11) It lets you express yourself

When you know who you are and what you want, it is easier for all that inner reflection to start to turn outward.

It can help you become more comfortable with who you are and showing that to the people around you.

12) It helps you to escape your self-doubt

Many people experience negative self-talk. That little voice in your head doesn’t always say the nicest and most supportive things. In fact, it can often be overly critical and unforgiving.

Doubting yourself can cause you to miss out on opportunities and hold you back from doing things that might actually make you happy.

13) It helps you communicate better

When you understand who you are, and why you say the things you do, you will be more likely to make any changes that you need to help you to effectively get your message across to other people.

Understanding how other people communicate too, is an amazing tool to have.
