65 Best Words of Affirmation And How To Use Them

Words of affirmation

Everyone wants to feel loved. But how we want to feel that love, and how we show love can be completely different.

When I began my healing journey, I quickly realized that my marriage was not as strong as I thought it was, and it needed some care and attention quickly if I wanted to strengthen it and get it back to where I wanted it to be.

One of the ways I did this was to research love languages and to figure out what my love language was, and what my husband’s love language was.

Today we are going to review words of affirmation one of the five love languages, what it means, and some examples.

Words of Affirmation Love Language

The concept of love languages, and words of affirmation as a love language, was first created by a marriage counselor named Gary Chapman.

He discovered that there are five love languages that everyone enjoys in some capacity in a romantic relationship- words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, quality time, and physical touch. However, he believes that everyone has one or two styles that we prefer when we are giving or receiving love from our partner.

Words of affirmation are the most common love language out of the five.

What Are Words of Affirmation?

Words of affirmation are words that you use to support, empathize, affirm, or positively uplift another person. They are words that communicate your love for another person.

How to Use Words of Affirmation

Using these words doesn’t have to be complicated, or some grand gesture. Simply thanking your partner for doing something, or reminding them that you love them will go a long way.

People who like to receive words of affirmation like to be reminded of your feelings, so anytime you get a warm and fuzzy feeling about them, try to make a point to verbalize it.

Benefits of Words of Affirmation

There are many great things about using words of affirmation. Some of them are:

Shifting your mindset

By constantly using positive words, we can reframe our thoughts and the thoughts of those around us from negative to positive. Positive thinking is associated with decreased anxiety, greater health and increased happiness.

Motivation and Inspiration

They can motivate us to reach our goals, and inspire us to keep going, even when times are hard. When other people encourage us, it gives us the fuel and determination we often need to keep going.

Strengthening relationships

Using the words, if that is your partner’s love language can help to strengthen your relationship. When they hear them it can help them feel more valued, cherished, and loved.

By using them frequently, you are letting your partner know that you understand how they would like to be loved, and that it is important to you that they receive that from you.

Increasing self-worth

Receiving words of affirmation can help to increase someone’s confidence and self-worth. These positive words reinforce our own beliefs in our abilities and can aid us in achieving our goals. When we constantly have someone else providing us with motivating and uplifting words it becomes difficult to ignore.

Boosting happiness

Studies have shown that giving and receiving compliments have a mood-boosting effect on both parties.
